When Kate Middleton married Prince William, she officially became a member of the royal family, fulfilling the childhood fantasies of many young women everywhere (that’s part of the reason why the royal wedding between the two was so special and memorable!). Not only did she become a member of the royal family, but she became someone who will take the place of the Queen of England one day, when Prince William is eventually named King.
That’s a pretty big deal, and it comes with some requirements: going to many, many events, wearing lots of fantastic clothes, and, of course, wearing a tiara sometimes. That’s an honor not every royal family member gets! Kate doesn’t attend every event wearing a tiara, so when she does, it’s kind of special, even for us to witness. And while she’s been seen in a few different ones, she of course has one she prefers over the others.
Kate just wore her favorite tiara to the state dinner, and you’re definitely going to want to see how it looks.

The Queen also hosted a state banquet at Buckingham Palace. This is where we got a glimpse of Kate in her favorite tiara, the Lover’s Knot.

This isn’t the first time Kate has worn the Lover’s Knot tiara. In October 2018, she wore it to a state banquet at Buckingham Palace in honor of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.

She also wore it in December 2018 to the Queen’s Diplomatic Corps Reception at Buckingham Palace.

The Lover’s Knot tiara was a favorite of Kate’s late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. That’s just one of the reasons it’s so special.
The Lover’s Knot Tiara is easily one of my favorite tiaras as it reminds me so much of Princess Diana when I see it on Kate. These are my favorite pictures of Diana wearing it 😍😭 pic.twitter.com/7tvwRBC5d3

According to Town & Country, it’s the replica of an earlier tiara that was created for Queen Mary in 1914 by the House of Garrand from pearls and diamonds already owned by her family. The Lover’s Knot tiara is modeled off of Mary’s grandmother, Princess Augusta of Hesse’s, headpiece, the original Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara.
Apparently, Queen Mary sacrificed a tiara from her jewelry collection in order to get it made.
When Queen Mary died in 1953, the crown was passed down to her granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II. She wore it a few times in the ’50s.
The Lover’s Knot Tiara was loaned to Princess Diana in 1981 as a wedding gift. Although Diana wore the Spencer Tiara on her wedding day, the Lover’s Knot did become one of her favorites… even though it was so heavy it was literally painful to wear.
Kate looked amazing in the tiara. She accessorized with other jewelry as well: the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, which was given to her in April 2019 by the Queen for “services to the sovereign.”

She was wearing a white Alexander McQueen gown. It looked perfect with the dress and the sash.

The banquet was a very elaborate affair that called for exactly that outfit. The tables were decorated with flowers and ornate candles.
