Prince William and Kate Middleton Served Cake That’s 7 Years Old At Baby Louis’ Christening, Which Feels Gross

One would assume that only the freshest of foods are served at a royal function. But that’s not always the case. In fact, Prince William and Kate Middleton served 7-year-old cake to the guests who attended their son, Prince Louis’, christening on July 9th. Uh — we’ll pass, thank you.

Prince Louis, who was born on April 23rd, was christened earlier today at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace. His parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were accompanied by their two other children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. According to the royal family’s official website, six other family members and friends, whom were asked to be Louis’s godparents, were also in attendance.

Not only did that lucky group of people get to witness the christening of a prince, but they also got the chance to eat a piece of 7-year-old cake.

Here’s the deal with the ancient cake: the Royal Family’s website states that guests of a royal christening eat a piece of the “christening cake,” which is “a tier taken from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding cake.”

As you might recall, Prince William and Kate Middleton were married in 2011, meaning those slices of cake, a fruit cake designed by Fiona Cairns, are almost a decade old.

Our main question is, how in the heck did they keep the cake edible for seven years? They must have frozen it. Or perhaps they vacuum-sealed it and then froze it. And we also have to wonder, how are the guests feeling right about now?

It’s a strange tradition, but it’s a tradition that is seemingly going strong. If the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge decide to have another child down the road, we’re sending good vibes in advance to those who have to eat the next round of the ever-aging cake.

If you’re currently on the hunt for the perfect wedding cake (one that’s not 7 years old), then we have wedding cake hacks you’ll want to check out ASAP.
