Your next bag of potato chips could come with an unexpected health warning. Utz Quality Foods LLC has issued a nationwide voluntary recall for several Zapp’s and Dirty potato chip products after a seasoning ingredient containing dry milk powder was flagged for possible Salmonella contamination. Although no illnesses have been reported, the FDA is urging consumers to carefully check UPC codes and best-by dates before eating the affected snacks. The recalled products were sold across the United States in grocery stores, convenience stores, and retail chains.

The affected bags carry UPC code 83791272917 and include best-by dates ranging from August 3 through August 24, 2026. Utz said the recall was issued after learning a seasoning ingredient may have been exposed to Salmonella contamination through a third-party supplier.

Dirty Maui Onion Potato Chips in the 2-ounce size were also recalled nationwide. The affected bags carry UPC code 83791520162 and include a best-by date of August 8, 2026. Retailers have also been directed to remove affected products from store shelves nationwide. Health officials say anyone who develops symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or stomach cramps after consuming the chips should contact a healthcare provider immediately.

The nationwide potato chip recall highlights how quickly food safety concerns can spread through modern supply chains, even when finished products initially test negative for contamination. While no illnesses have been reported so far, the FDA and Utz continue monitoring the situation closely as recalled products are removed from circulation. For consumers, the recall serves as another reminder to regularly check FDA food safety alerts and carefully review packaging details before eating recalled items.
