Dominance in the fast-food industry is notoriously difficult to sustain, yet Chick-fil-A managed to do just that for more than a decade. The chicken chain built a reputation around friendly service, operational consistency, and a customer experience that helped it secure the top spot in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) quick-service restaurant rankings for 11 consecutive years.

That streak has now ended. For the first time since Chick-fil-A began its run at the top, another brand has claimed the highest position in the annual survey. The new leader is Jersey Mike’s Subs, a sandwich chain that has quietly expanded across the country while building a loyal customer base.

The shift may seem modest on paper—Jersey Mike’s earned an ACSI score of 84 out of 100 compared with Chick-fil-A’s 83—but the symbolic significance is much larger. In an industry where customer satisfaction can influence everything from repeat visits to brand loyalty, even a one-point difference represents a notable changing of the guard.

Jersey Mike’s may be a new name at the top of the rankings, but it is far from a new company. Founded in 1956, the sandwich chain has spent decades building its footprint before recently accelerating its growth nationwide.

The company added 238 net new locations during 2025 and surpassed $4.2 billion in systemwide sales. Its rapid expansion helped it qualify for inclusion in the ACSI rankings, which evaluate brands with sufficient market presence based on thousands of customer surveys.

Industry observers point to several factors behind the chain’s success. The ACSI highlighted freshness, food variety, and perceived value as strengths for Jersey Mike’s. At a time when consumers have become increasingly selective about where they spend their money, the brand appears to have benefited from delivering a consistent experience while maintaining a reputation for quality.

What Customers Want Is Changing

The latest rankings suggest that consumers are looking beyond price alone when evaluating fast-food restaurants. According to the ACSI report, customers are placing greater emphasis on consistency, reliability, and overall value rather than simply choosing the cheapest option available.

That shift comes as restaurants continue navigating inflation, higher operating costs, and changing consumer spending habits. Across the industry, chains have been forced to balance rising expenses with customer expectations, making service quality and perceived value increasingly important differentiators.

The rankings reflect that broader trend. Chick-fil-A remained the top-rated chicken chain, while Jersey Mike’s led the sandwich category. Other category leaders included Papa Johns and Pizza Hut for pizza, Starbucks for coffee and bakery offerings, and Burger King and Culver’s in the burger segment. Rather than a single dominant formula for success, the results suggest customers are rewarding brands that consistently deliver on their specific strengths.

The Competition Is Far From Over

The narrow margin separating Jersey Mike’s and Chick-fil-A might suggest little has changed. In reality, the rankings mark one of the most notable shifts in fast food’s customer-satisfaction landscape in more than a decade. Chick-fil-A’s 11-year run at the top had become one of the industry’s most durable streaks, turning the chain into the benchmark against which competitors measured service and customer loyalty.

Jersey Mike’s rise signals that consumers may be broadening their definition of what makes a fast-food experience stand out. While speed and convenience remain essential, customers increasingly appear willing to reward brands that deliver freshness, menu variety, and a sense of consistency across every visit. The chain’s debut at No. 1 suggests that even long-established leaders can be challenged when a rival aligns with changing consumer expectations.

The timing is particularly notable as restaurants across the country grapple with higher costs and more cautious spending habits. The ACSI report found that customers are placing greater emphasis on reliability and perceived value, creating opportunities for brands that can deliver a dependable experience without competing solely on price.
