Summer grocery shopping could become a little less expensive for Walmart customers. The retailer has lowered prices on thousands of products across Walmart and Sam’s Club stores, focusing on the kinds of items people buy for cookouts, road trips, family gatherings, and everyday meals. While the announcement sparked political debate over why the discounts happened, shoppers are more likely to notice the savings at the checkout line.
Ground Beef Is One of the Biggest Headliners

One of the most talked-about discounts is on Walmart’s one-pound roll of 73% lean ground beef, which dropped from $6.74 to $5.94, a roughly 12% reduction. Beef prices have climbed sharply over the past year because the U.S. cattle herd is at its smallest level in decades following prolonged droughts, making this rollback especially noticeable for families planning burgers or tacos.
Fresh Produce Is Also Seeing Deep Cuts

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are receiving some of the steepest markdowns. Fresh sweet corn on the cob has fallen from 68 cents to 25 cents per ear, while 2.25-pound bags of fresh red cherries have dropped from $11.18 to $5.63. Since both products are in peak season, Walmart says the lower prices are intended to help customers enjoy affordable summer meals and celebrations.
Backyard Barbecue Staples Are Getting Cheaper

Several classic cookout favorites are also on sale. Ball Park Classic Hot Dogs, Bush’s Original Baked Beans, Heinz ketchup, French’s mustard, Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce, Foster Farms chicken wings, and Smithfield pork spareribs are among the featured rollbacks. Together, the discounts can reduce the cost of hosting a backyard barbecue without changing the menu.
Snacks and Drinks Are Included Too

The savings extend well beyond fresh foods. Lay’s potato chips, Frito-Lay variety packs, Great Value ice cream, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, and Mountain Dew are all receiving temporary price reductions. One of the biggest bargains is on 24-packs of Coca-Cola products, which are selling for $9.97 instead of $14.97, while comparable Pepsi products are also priced at $9.97.
Household Essentials Are Part of the Promotion

The discounts are not limited to groceries. Walmart says thousands of products across household essentials, outdoor living, apparel, toys, grills, lawn care items, sunscreen, and disposable paper plates are also included. The company describes the initiative as part of its regular effort to provide lower prices during one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year.
Trump Claimed Credit, but Walmart Stayed Silent

The announcement quickly became political after President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that Walmart lowered prices at his administration’s request to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday. Walmart confirmed the price cuts but declined to comment on the president’s claim, and its official announcement made no reference to the White House. The retailer has simply said it is making additional investments in lower prices for the summer.
Experts Say These Rollbacks Are Typical Retail Strategy

Retail economists say the discounts appear to be a seasonal promotion rather than evidence that grocery inflation has suddenly disappeared. Michigan State University food economist David Ortega told USA TODAY that retailers often reduce prices on highly visible items like beef, corn, chips, and soda because shoppers use those products to judge whether grocery prices feel affordable overall. He noted that while promotions help, the total cost of a grocery trip remains much higher than it was several years ago.
Why Grocery Bills Still Feel High

Even with these discounts, broader food costs remain high. Grocery prices are about 2.7% higher than a year ago, according to recent data cited by Walmart’s announcement, while beef prices continue to face supply pressures from reduced cattle herds. Other expenses, including transportation, labor, energy, and packaging, also continue to influence food prices, meaning selective discounts are unlikely to reverse overall inflation.
More Retailers Could Follow Walmart’s Lead

Industry experts believe Walmart’s highly visible discounts may encourage competing grocery chains to match prices on comparable items, particularly products that shoppers can easily compare from store to store. Even if the broader inflation picture doesn’t change overnight, consumers may continue seeing promotional deals on popular seasonal foods throughout the summer as retailers compete for value-conscious shoppers.
