The battle for chicken customers is becoming more intense, and KFC is responding with one of the biggest overhauls in its modern history. The Yum Brands chain has announced a global refresh that touches nearly every part of its business, from menu offerings and beverages to restaurant design and branding. Company executives say the goal is to strengthen KFC’s position in an increasingly crowded market where rivals such as Chick-fil-A, Raising Cane’s, Popeyes, and even McDonald’s are investing heavily in chicken-focused menus.

Why KFC Feels Pressure To Change

Although KFC helped pioneer the modern chicken fast-food category, its position in the United States has weakened over the past several years. According to CNBC, KFC’s share of the U.S. chicken quick-service market fell from 16% in 2021 to 9.4% by 2024, allowing competitors such as Popeyes and Raising Cane’s to move ahead. The decline has forced the company to rethink how it attracts younger consumers and competes in a market where chicken continues gaining popularity.

Boneless Chicken Is Becoming The Main Attraction

One of the most noticeable changes is KFC’s increased focus on boneless chicken. Company executives say customer demand is shifting toward tenders and other easy-to-eat options. KFC plans to upgrade its existing tenders while expanding boneless menu offerings globally. Chief Concept Officer Christophe Poirier said the company is moving “from chicken-on-the-bone to more and more boneless chicken,” reflecting changing consumer preferences.

More Than 20 Sauces Are Joining The Menu

KFC’s strategy extends beyond chicken itself. The company is building what it calls a global sauce pantry featuring more than 20 varieties designed to encourage customization. Flavors include options such as Chimichurri Ranch and Hot Honey Habanero, blending familiar favorites with international influences. Executives believe consumers increasingly want meals they can personalize through dipping, drenching, and mixing flavors.

The New “Dunked” Concept Pushes Flavor First

The company is also introducing a menu category known as “Dunked,” featuring tenders, wings, and sandwiches fully coated in sauce rather than served alongside it. Some versions have already launched in markets such as South Africa and India. The concept reflects broader restaurant trends favoring bold flavors and highly shareable menu items designed to stand out on social media and appeal to younger diners.

KFC Wants To Be Known For Drinks Too

Another major part of the overhaul involves beverages. Under a new platform called “KWENCH by KFC,” the chain is expanding beyond traditional soft drinks with offerings such as boba refreshers, sparkling lemonades, iced coffees, and specialty milkshakes. The company hopes these drinks will encourage visits outside traditional meal times and create additional revenue opportunities throughout the day.

Restaurants Are Being Redesigned As Well

The transformation is not limited to food. KFC is introducing a new generation of restaurant designs intended to create more engaging customer experiences. An open-concept location is scheduled to open in McKinney, Texas, while a larger two-story flagship restaurant is planned for Dubai. Executives say these designs aim to make dining out feel more immersive at a time when many customers increasingly rely on takeout and delivery.

Even Colonel Sanders Is Getting A Refresh

Customers will also notice updates to KFC’s visual identity. The company plans to refresh its iconic bucket design, modernize packaging, and subtly update the appearance of Colonel Sanders across advertising and digital platforms. While executives stress that the brand’s heritage remains central, they believe a refreshed look can help KFC remain relevant to a new generation of customers.

Competition Is Driving Much Of The Strategy

The urgency behind KFC’s overhaul reflects broader changes across the fast-food industry. Rivals continue introducing new chicken products while expanding locations and investing heavily in marketing. Meanwhile, McDonald’s and other major chains are increasingly emphasizing chicken as consumer preferences shift away from some traditional menu categories. KFC’s leadership sees modernization as necessary to protect market share and reclaim momentum.

The Company Is Betting On Reinvention

KFC’s leaders describe these changes as the brand’s “next chapter,” not simply a menu update. The rollout will begin in markets including the United Kingdom and Ireland before expanding further across the United States, Australia, and other regions. With more than 34,000 restaurants operating in over 150 countries, the company is making a substantial wager that innovation, customization, and a more modern customer experience can help keep Colonel Sanders’ famous chicken competitive in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
