Pizza Hut is making a surprising change to one of the most recognizable names in fast food, but only for a limited time. As the 2026 NFL season kicks off, the chain is temporarily dropping the word “Pizza” and asking customers to simply call it “Hut.” The unusual rebrand is part of a football-themed marketing campaign designed to capture attention during one of the busiest times of the year for pizza orders.

The company says the temporary change will last 25 weeks, spanning the NFL season from September through early January. While the menu isn’t changing, customers will notice updated storefronts, social media profiles, and advertisements embracing the new “Hut” identity.

The playful rebrand comes at an important moment for Pizza Hut as the company looks to strengthen its position following a major ownership transition and renewed efforts to reconnect with customers.

The Football Connection Behind The Name Change

The inspiration behind the temporary name change is simple: the familiar football cadence “hut, hut!” called by quarterbacks before a play begins. By dropping “Pizza” from its name, the company hopes to tie itself more closely to football season, when pizza orders traditionally surge during game-day gatherings.

To launch the campaign, Pizza Hut covered the word “Pizza” on select restaurant signs with football graphics and updated its social media accounts to display only the word “Hut.” The company also introduced football-themed advertising and promotional packaging to celebrate the season.

Executives have described the move as a fun seasonal promotion rather than a permanent rebrand. Once the NFL season concludes, the company plans to restore its full Pizza Hut name and traditional branding.

More Than Just A Marketing Stunt

Although the campaign is playful, it also arrives during a period of significant change for the restaurant chain. Earlier this year, Yum! Brands agreed to sell Pizza Hut’s business in deals totaling approximately $2.7 billion, with LongRange Capital acquiring operations outside mainland China and Yum China purchasing the mainland China business.

The chain has also been working to refresh its image after several challenging years. In addition to football-themed promotions, Pizza Hut has been bringing back nostalgic elements from its classic restaurants, including retro décor, red cups, and throwback menu offerings aimed at longtime fans.

Marketing experts say temporary rebrands like this are designed to generate conversation on social media while connecting the brand to cultural moments, in this case, football season, when pizza becomes one of the most popular game-day foods in America.

The Name May Change, But The Pizza Stays The Same

Customers won’t need to worry about finding a different menu when they visit their local restaurant. Despite the temporary name change, Pizza Hut says its pizzas, wings, sides, and other menu favorites will remain exactly the same throughout the promotion.

Instead, the campaign is meant to add a bit of fun to football season while reminding customers that Pizza Hut remains a go-to destination for watch parties and family gatherings. The temporary switch to “Hut” is expected to run only through the NFL season before the iconic full name returns.

Ultimately, the unusual rebrand demonstrates how companies continue looking for creative ways to stand out in a crowded fast-food market. By turning a familiar football phrase into a nationwide marketing campaign, Pizza Hut hopes that customers will be calling “Hut!” long before they order their next pizza.
