One widely shared receipt showed a suggested 15% tip that exceeded what diners calculated even after accounting for tax. After breaking down the numbers, users realized the suggested amounts were calculated after tax and before discounts, a detail displayed on the checkout screen but easy to overlook in the moment.

 

While some diners acknowledged that the policy was technically disclosed, others said the presentation felt misleading. Several commenters said they felt pressured to accept inflated suggestions without enough transparency, especially as tip screens have become faster and more automated.

Most respondents also opposed businesses suggesting tip amounts directly on screens or receipts.

 

That frustration has only intensified as inflation continues to squeeze household budgets. Data reported by Fox Business, citing Toast and Bankrate surveys, shows that average tipping percentages at restaurants have declined in recent years, a sign that diners are pushing back against what many see as “tip creep.”

 

Ted Rossman, a senior industry analyst at Bankrate, told Fox Business that many consumers feel worn down by tipping prompts embedded into digital payment systems. He noted that while Americans still want to reward good service, they resent feeling watched or nudged toward higher amounts,especially when the calculations aren’t immediately clear.
