Walmart is finally bringing a payment option that many shoppers have wanted for years: tap-to-pay. Beginning August 24, 2026, select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations will begin accepting contactless payments, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, with the rollout expected to reach all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of the year.
The Change Marks a Major Shift for Walmart

For years, Walmart was one of the biggest holdouts among major U.S. retailers when it came to NFC payments. Instead of allowing shoppers to simply tap a phone or contactless card, the company promoted its own Walmart Pay system, which uses a QR code at checkout.
Apple Pay and Google Pay Are Both Included

The new system is not limited to Apple users. Walmart’s Tap to Pay rollout includes Apple Pay, Google Pay and other eligible contactless payment methods, allowing shoppers to use compatible phones, smartwatches or contactless cards. This gives customers more flexibility instead of requiring them to use Walmart’s own payment technology.
The Rollout Starts at Select Stores

Customers should not expect every Walmart store to have the feature immediately. The rollout begins at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations on August 24, with Walmart planning to expand Tap to Pay across all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026.
Walmart Pay Is Not Going Away

The arrival of Apple Pay does not mean Walmart is abandoning its own payment system. Walmart Pay will remain available alongside cash, traditional credit and debit cards and the new contactless options. The company says the goal is to give customers more choices rather than replace its existing payment methods.
The Company Previously Backed Its Own Approach

Walmart spent years investing in alternatives to conventional tap-to-pay systems. Its Walmart Pay service allows customers to connect payment cards through the Walmart app and scan a QR code at checkout, while Sam’s Club has offered Scan & Go for members who want to handle purchases through their phones. Walmart had also been involved with CurrentC, an alternative mobile-payment system that ultimately failed.
Shoppers Had Been Asking for the Change for Years

Walmart’s resistance to Apple Pay became increasingly noticeable as contactless payments became common at other major retailers. Shoppers who routinely used Apple Pay or Google Pay elsewhere had to carry another payment method or use Walmart’s app when shopping at Walmart, making the retailer’s policy a frequent source of complaints.
Fuel Stations Will Get Tap-to-Pay Later

The initial rollout focuses on Walmart and Sam’s Club stores, but the company has another expansion planned. Tap-to-pay is expected to reach Walmart’s fuel stations by the middle of 2027, meaning customers will eventually be able to use contactless payments at participating pumps as well.
Digital Wallets Could Add Convenience and Privacy

Using a digital wallet can make checkout faster because customers can authenticate payment on their phone or smartwatch rather than taking out a physical card. Digital wallets can also use tokenized payment credentials instead of exposing the physical card number during a transaction, adding another potential privacy benefit.
Walmart Is Finally Catching Up With Contactless Payments

Walmart’s decision to embrace Apple Pay and other contactless payment methods represents a major reversal after years of relying on its own Walmart Pay system. The rollout begins August 24, 2026, reaches all Walmart and Sam’s Club stores by the end of 2026 and is expected at fuel stations by mid-2027. For shoppers who have long wanted the ability to simply tap an iPhone, Android phone, smartwatch or contactless card at Walmart, the change finally brings the retailer closer to the checkout experience already offered by many of its competitors.
