The fast-food industry continues to face major shifts, and one of the most recognizable burger chains in America is preparing for a significant change. Wendy’s has announced plans to close hundreds of its restaurants across the United States in 2026 as part of a broader effort to improve the company’s long-term performance. The closures will affect a portion of its nationwide footprint as the brand works to strengthen profitability and refocus its strategy.

According to company statements shared during an earnings call, Wendy’s expects to shut down approximately five to six percent of its U.S. locations. With nearly 6,000 restaurants operating nationwide, that percentage could translate to roughly 300 to 360 stores closing during the first half of 2026.

Company leaders say the decision is intended to remove underperforming locations and allow franchise operators to concentrate resources on restaurants with stronger growth potential. While the move may surprise customers, executives say it is part of a broader transformation designed to strengthen the brand for the future.

Why Wendy’s Is Closing Hundreds of Restaurants

The closures follow a period of declining sales for the company’s U.S. operations. Reports indicate that Wendy’s experienced a drop in systemwide sales and same-store sales in 2025, which prompted executives to rethink how the chain manages its restaurant network.

Executives explained that many of the restaurants scheduled to close have struggled to perform consistently. Some locations are older or located in areas where demand has weakened, making it difficult for franchise owners to maintain profitability. By shutting down these outlets, the company hopes to improve performance across the remaining stores.

The decision also comes after the company previously closed hundreds of locations in recent years. In 2024 alone, Wendy’s shut down around 240 restaurants nationwide, and additional closures occurred during the final months of 2025. The new wave of shutdowns reflects an ongoing effort to reshape the brand’s restaurant footprint.

The Company’s Strategy Moving Forward

While hundreds of locations may close, the company is also introducing new initiatives aimed at improving its business. Executives have highlighted menu innovation and new product launches as key elements of the company’s strategy, including new burgers, chicken items, and value offerings designed to attract customers.

Wendy’s leadership has also emphasized strengthening marketing efforts and investing more in digital advertising, social media campaigns, and streaming platforms. These changes are intended to modernize the brand and help it compete more effectively in a crowded fast-food market.

Despite the closures, the company has indicated that it still sees opportunities for growth. Some underperforming locations may eventually be replaced with newer restaurants in stronger markets, allowing the chain to modernize its footprint while maintaining a nationwide presence.

What the Closures Could Mean for Customers

For many customers, the closures may mean that their nearest Wendy’s location could disappear or move farther away. However, the company has not yet released a detailed list of specific restaurants that will shut down, leaving many communities waiting to see whether their local store will be affected.

Company officials say the goal of the closures is to strengthen the overall system rather than shrink it permanently. By concentrating investment on stronger locations, franchise operators may be able to improve service, upgrade equipment, and deliver a more consistent customer experience.

Although the announcement signals a major shift for the brand, Wendy’s leaders believe the strategy will help position the company for long-term success. As the fast-food industry evolves and competition intensifies, the chain is betting that a leaner, more focused restaurant network will help it remain a major player in the years ahead.
