There’s really not an idle minute that goes by when we’re not day-dreaming about food. Burritos… mac and cheese… chocolate… However, day-dreaming and actually dreaming about food are two completely different things. If you’ve ever dreamt about food while in dreamland, you’re one of the lucky few.
According to Jeremy Taylor from Psychology Today, it’s rare to dream about the physical act of eating — that is, putting food into your mouth and chewing. We often experience “off camera” eating in our dreams, Taylor said, meaning we recall up until the moment we’re about to dig in and then we cut to another portion of the dream.
However, on the off chance that dreamers do remember eating and tasting food, Taylor believes it could symbolize a boundary between “me” and “not me,” and when food is eaten, the “not me” becomes the “me.” This symbolism is us realizing projections we have put on others (our friend is very caring) are actually true for ourselves (we are also very caring).
Similarly, Dr. Veronica Tonay, a licensed psychologist and author of three books about dreams, told the Daily Meal that food in dreams is mostly paired with other metaphorical language and can represent how we nurture ourselves.
“Ideally, when you dream about food, you dream about eating things that are good for you, that actually do provide nutrients and sustenance and energy,” Dr. Tonay explained to the Daily Meal. “But if you dream about pastries, desserts, and so on, that may indicate you are attempting to nurture yourself with unhealthy, but briefly satisfying, ‘food’ (which may represent actual food, people, situations, or activities).”
It might behoove you to figure out what certain foods represent within your dreams. If you continually dream of pizza, try to connect pizza to its dream surroundings or really dive into past memories that concern pizza.
Dreaming and dream imagery is subjective, so knowing exactly what food dreams mean is dependent on the person. But hey, any dream involving food is a good dream, in our opinion.
