Back in the day, the slogan for Goldfish crackers was: “One Snack That’s OK To Get Hooked On!” And the world did just that. So that’s why it’s extremely alarming that varieties of Goldfish crackers have been recalled, since they’re a staple in pretty much every household. They’re especially popular with kids (although I’m a grown woman and I love Goldfish). Here’s what you need to know to see if your stash has been affected.
Pepperidge Farm, the company responsible for everyone’s favorite baked snack cracker, pulled certain Goldfish from shelves out of concern that their seasoning might have been tainted with a strain of Salmonella. The good news is that right now, nobody’s reported a related illness. So it seems like the company is just being extra precautious, which is admirable. Since they’re a favorite with kids, it’s important that they treat every threat seriously.
According to the company, two Flavor Blasted varieties are included in the recall (Xtra Cheddar and Sour Cream & Onion), along with other products like the Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar. Their Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel combo is also one to look out for.
The products have sell-by dates from November of 2018 to dates in 2019. It looks as if products with dates prior to that are okay. Here’s a full list they’ve released, along with UPCs, so you can check and see whether or not you’re at risk.
All sizes are included in the recall. So, even Flavor Blasted Goldfish crackers from the vending machine are at risk.
In a release regarding the recall, NJ.com reported that the company admitted they “initiated an investigation and, out of an abundance of caution, is voluntarily recalling four varieties of Goldfish crackers.” The ingredient that’s making them nervous is the whey powder. Their supplier let them know that there was a chance that the bacterium was present in the ingredient. Salmonella often causes diarrhea and abdominal distress, and you should see a doctor if you’re concerned or notice these symptoms for more than a few days.
It’s not just Goldfish crackers that have been affected this week. Ritz also announced that they were pulling products due to a Salmonella fear. So, it’s been a pretty bad week for crackers. But it’s better to be safe than sorry.
