Here’s The Disturbing Reason Why You Shouldn’t Eat In Bed

dangers of eating in bed

A few years back, I told my husband that I wanted to fulfill a dream I’ve had as a child. I wanted to eat in bed — specifically, I wanted to eat a large cheese pizza while watching a movie. The greasier the pizza, the better. It’s since turned into our number one “indoor” date, especially after having a baby. But while it doesn’t happen too often, there are a bunch of reasons why eating in bed probably isn’t the best idea.

Let’s just throw this out there — you probably don’t change your sheets enough.

According to Esquire, it’s ideal to change your sheets once a week, but once a month is “fine.” Any more time and you’re entering dangerous territory. Personally, I consider myself to be a pretty clean person, but it’s just so time-consuming to change sheets and I resort to the “I’ll do it later” laundry method from back in my dorm days. It’s especially tough if you don’t have decent spares. Good sheets are super expensive.

Keep in mind, that’s just the recommended time to change up sheets if you don’t eat in bed. If you do, it’s even worse.

Crumbs and spills can be real hazards that might go unnoticed at the time. The disturbing reason why you shouldn’t introduce them in the first place is that they attract bugs. The Huffington Post says that ants and cockroaches are the most common critters to find their way into your sheets, and also note how it really doesn’t take much to attract a roach. Roaches always seem to know where the tiny leftovers are.

Flies are also attracted to leftover food particles, and they’re tough to get rid of. Plus, they’ll drive your pets insane. (Source: I have one dog and one cat. The second there’s a fly in the house, they both go bananas.)

In case bugs don’t scare you, there’s a secondary reason why eating in bed isn’t ideal.

Food & Wine found out that by eating in bed, you’re more prone to distractions. And when you’re distracted, you tend to overeat. So, you’re not really listening to your body when you’re under the covers with a bowl of ramen.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you eat in bed, a lot of problems might creep up. As tempting as it may be, it’d be frightening to find a family of ants camping out in your room — all thanks to the fact that you were eating sugar cookies a few days prior.
