Costco Custom Cake Delivery Is Here, but One Rule Could Trip Up Your Order

What if the cake for your next birthday or graduation could arrive at your door along with the rest of your party supplies? Costco is now offering nationwide delivery for its popular custom cakes through its same-day service, removing one more errand from the event-planning checklist. There is a catch, though: custom cakes do not follow the same speedy timetable shoppers may expect from regular Costco grocery delivery.
Shoppers can order through Costco’s same-day website, where orders are fulfilled by Instacart. The cake category includes customizable 10-inch and sheet cakes, with options for decorations, flavor, frosting color, and a personalized message. That means much of the customization previously associated with planning a warehouse pickup can now be handled while placing an online order.
There are a few restrictions worth knowing before checkout. The entire delivery order must total at least $35 before taxes and fees, and multiple custom cakes in one order must have identical customizations, with a limit of five. Perhaps more importantly, custom cake orders cannot be changed or canceled after midnight on the day they are placed, making a final review especially worthwhile.
The 72-Hour Rule Changes How You Need to Order

The biggest planning requirement is the lead time. Once a custom cake goes into the cart, Costco only displays delivery windows that are at least 72 hours away. Unlike ordinary groceries that may qualify for same-day delivery, a personalized cake requires advance planning, so this is not a service to rely on the night before a celebration.
The more surprising catch is that those 72 hours apply to everything else in the same cart. Add groceries, drinks, or other party essentials alongside the custom cake, and those items will be held for delivery with the cake rather than arriving sooner. That could easily trip up someone expecting the non-cake portion of the order to arrive immediately.
Fortunately, the workaround is simple. If you need everyday groceries right away but want the custom cake delivered for an event several days later, place two separate orders. Keeping immediate purchases out of the cake order allows the cake to follow its required lead time without unnecessarily delaying everything else you need from Costco.
Costco Can Deliver More of the Party Than Just Cake

Custom cakes are not the only event-friendly foods joining Costco’s delivery lineup. Select party platters are available through the same-day service as well, giving hosts another way to reduce pre-party warehouse trips. Options cited by the source include fruit, meat and cheese platters, veggie platters, sandwich platters and a shrimp platter served with cocktail sauce.
That combination can be particularly convenient for larger celebrations. Instead of arranging separate pickups for the cake and some of the food, eligible items can be delivered directly to the event venue. For birthdays, graduations, office celebrations, and other gatherings, eliminating a bulky cake pickup can make the hours before guests arrive considerably easier to manage.
Still, careful ordering matters more when customization is involved. Between the minimum order requirement, restrictions on differently customized cakes, and the cutoff for changes or cancellations, shoppers have several details to confirm before submitting an order. Checking the message, frosting, flavor, decorations, and delivery date before checkout can help prevent an inconvenient surprise later.
A Little Advance Planning Makes Delivery Much More Useful

For Costco members who already rely on the warehouse for celebration cakes, delivery removes one of the more awkward party errands. There is no need to find refrigerator space in the car or squeeze a cake pickup between decorating and preparing for guests. Having it brought directly to the destination makes an already popular party option considerably more convenient.
The important thing is not to mistake “same-day service” for same-day custom cake delivery. The 72-hour lead time remains the defining rule, and placing other purchases in the same cart means they inherit that wait. Separate orders may therefore be the smarter approach whenever some Costco items are needed immediately, and the cake is intended for later.
With those details understood, the new option could simplify everything from an intimate birthday dinner to a larger celebration. Customization, delivery, and eligible party platters can now be handled without a warehouse pickup, but the convenience works best for planners rather than procrastinators. Give Costco at least three days, double-check the order before the cancellation cutoff, and keep urgent groceries in a separate cart.
