Listen — we sometimes don’t read the instruction manual. Especially if it’s a manual for something that already seems self-explanatory, like a stove or a microwave. And it turns out that we’re not alone, because it took one guy a decade to realize that his dishwasher is actually more helpful than he already thought. This epiphany is making everyone on the internet rethink their most helpful appliance.
Even though it’s really convenient to have a dishwasher, not every place comes equipped with one. If you’re a renter, a dishwasher is always a hidden bonus, but you probably won’t be seeking out the instructions before washing your first load of dishes. You know where the soap goes, and you know which buttons to push. That’s enough, right?
Mike from Ireland, who tweets under the handle of @zuroph, expressed his utmost delight when he realized that many dishwashers have adjustable shelves — like his own. He moved into his place way back in 2008 and was a little upset to realize his dishwasher couldn’t handle his bigger plates. So he chose to handwash them on a regular basis.
If only he made this dishwasher discovery a decade ago, he could have saved a lot of time (as well as dish soap).
I moved into this house in 2008. It always annoyed me that the lower level of the dishwasher wasn’t tall enough to fit my biggest dinner plates. Been handwashing them all this time. This week I discovered you can raise the upper shelf and all my plates fit fine. TEN FUCKING YEARS

While the tweet was sent out back in January, it remains pinned to Mike’s account. Every day, more and more people stumble upon it and realize that one small adjustment could save them a ton of time and manual labor.
For those who asked, the workhorse of a dishwasher that’s lasted somewhere between 10-15 years is an Izzi by Zanussi @electrolux. The wheels sometimes pop off but hopefully we’ll get another year out of it pic.twitter.com/h8KI7O6vbU

WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME?!

It’s great that he was willing to own up to the oversight. And really, it’s something a lot of us don’t openly think about. Especially since moving takes up so much mental energy that trying to troubleshoot a dishwasher usually isn’t at the top of your to-do list.
Now, thanks to Mike, a thorough Google search will be conducted for every appliance that doesn’t seem to work the way it should.
