Jack in the Box Is Closing Dozens More Restaurants, and Your Local Spot Could Be Next
Jack in the Box is continuing a major restaurant-closure program that could eventually eliminate 150 to 200 locations as the chain works to improve the performance of its remaining restaurants. The company had 2,115 restaurants at the end of its third quarter of fiscal 2026, down from 2,168 a year earlier, and management says the closure program will continue beyond this year. For customers, that means a familiar neighborhood location could eventually disappear even if it is still operating today.
The Closure Plan Was Announced in 2025
Jack in the Box announced its “JACK on Track” strategy in April 2025, including plans to close about 150 to 200 underperforming restaurants. The company originally expected roughly 80 to 120 closures by the end of 2025, with additional locations closing later as franchise agreements reached their termination dates. The goal was to reduce the number of weaker restaurants and create a more sustainable portfolio of locations.
72 Restaurants Closed During 2025
Jack in the Box closed 72 restaurants during 2025 as it began carrying out the broader reduction plan. The closures occurred in stages, with 12 locations closed by the end of May, another 13 by the end of August and 47 more reported by December 1. The total was below the upper end of the company’s original target, leaving additional closures to be addressed in subsequent years.
40 More Locations Have Closed in 2026
The chain has continued closing restaurants in 2026, with 40 locations shut down through the third quarter. Jack in the Box reported 17 restaurant closures during the third quarter alone, leaving 2,115 restaurants across the system at the end of the period. The company has said the pace has been slower than originally expected, but the closure effort remains active.
More Closures Are Expected Before the Year Ends
Jack in the Box expects another 10 to 20 restaurant closures during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. Its updated guidance calls for approximately 2,100 restaurants at the end of the fiscal year, including about 25 new openings and roughly 50 to 60 closures for the full year. Management has also said elevated closures could continue into 2027 and 2028 as the company works through locations that were not closed during 2026.
Lease Costs Are Slowing the Shutdowns
One reason the closures have taken longer than expected is that shutting a restaurant does not necessarily eliminate its lease obligations. Jack in the Box executives said that in some cases the cost of continuing to operate a poorly performing restaurant can be lower than the financial burden of closing it before a lease expires. The company has hired a third-party firm to help work through leases and identify ways to accelerate closures.
Falling Sales Are Part of the Problem
Jack in the Box reported a 1.1% decline in systemwide same-store sales during the third quarter of fiscal 2026, with transactions declining while higher prices provided some offset. Franchise same-store sales fell 1.2%, while company-operated same-store sales declined 0.9%, and franchise-level margin also fell from the previous year. The company says improving franchisee profitability and restaurant performance are central to its current turnaround effort.
Not Every Jack in the Box Is at Risk
The closure program is focused on underperforming restaurants rather than an across-the-board shutdown of the chain’s locations. Jack in the Box executives have said franchisees are increasingly willing to close weaker restaurants before their franchise agreements expire so they can concentrate resources on stronger locations. That means customers in areas with profitable, higher-performing restaurants may continue to have local locations even as other communities lose theirs.
Workers and Customers Will Feel the Impact
Restaurant closures affect more than a company’s store count because workers can lose jobs and customers can lose a nearby option for meals. One Everett, Washington, location scheduled to close in October is expected to affect 24 employees, according to a WARN filing cited in recent coverage. With additional closures expected into 2027 and potentially 2028, the effects of Jack in the Box’s footprint reduction could continue to be felt well beyond the current fiscal year.
Your Local Restaurant Could Still Be There Tomorrow
Jack in the Box is not publishing a single complete public list of every location that could eventually close, making it difficult for customers to know whether their neighborhood restaurant is among the locations being evaluated. The clearest picture comes from company announcements, local closure reports, WARN filings and changes to individual restaurant listings, while the company continues reviewing its closure program. With 50 to 60 total closures expected for fiscal 2026 and additional shutdowns potentially extending into 2027 and 2028, customers may want to check their local location rather than assume it will remain open.
