McDonald’s Shift to Kiosks Is Leaving Some Customers Without Enough In-Store Help

McDonald’s has spent years expanding digital ordering through self-service kiosks, mobile apps, and other technology designed to speed up service. While many customers appreciate the convenience, others say the shift has made it more difficult to receive personal assistance when ordering or resolving problems. Recent reports and consumer surveys suggest that many guests still value having employees readily available, even as restaurants become increasingly automated.

Self-Service Kiosks Are Becoming the Standard

Most McDonald’s restaurants now feature self-service kiosks that allow customers to browse the menu, customize meals, and complete payment without visiting a cashier. The technology is part of the company’s long-term digital strategy, which also includes mobile ordering, curbside pickup, and delivery integration. McDonald’s says these options can improve speed, increase order accuracy, and provide customers with greater flexibility.

Some Customers Say Help Is Harder to Find

One of the biggest complaints is that fewer employees are available to answer questions or assist customers inside the restaurant. Guests who are unfamiliar with touchscreen ordering, have payment issues, or need help customizing an order sometimes report difficulty finding someone at the front counter. Critics argue that technology should complement customer service rather than replace it.

Surveys Show Many People Experience Kiosk Problems

According to a recent restaurant technology survey cited by TheStreet, about 60% of customers regularly use self-service kiosks, but roughly 80% say they have experienced at least one problem. Common complaints include frozen screens, malfunctioning payment terminals, printers that fail to print receipts, and confusing menu navigation. These issues can create frustration when staff members are not immediately available to help.

Digital Ordering Still Offers Several Advantages

Despite the criticism, kiosks have become popular with many customers who prefer ordering at their own pace. The digital menus make it easier to customize meals, browse the full menu, and avoid waiting in line during busy periods. McDonald’s also benefits from fewer order-entry mistakes and the ability to process multiple orders simultaneously.

Employees Are Being Shifted to Other Roles

McDonald’s has emphasized that automation is not intended to eliminate workers entirely. Instead, many restaurants have reassigned employees to food preparation, table service, curbside delivery, drive-thru operations, and assisting customers when needed. Company officials say the goal is to improve efficiency while allowing staff to focus on higher-value tasks throughout the restaurant.

Older Customers May Face Additional Challenges

Not every customer is comfortable using digital ordering systems. Seniors, first-time visitors, and individuals with limited experience using touchscreens may prefer ordering directly from a cashier. Consumer advocates say maintaining visible staff members who can quickly assist these guests remains important for providing an inclusive customer experience.

Customer Experience Can Influence Loyalty

Research continues to show that a single poor customer experience can affect whether someone returns. Industry surveys cited in recent reports suggest many consumers are willing to switch to a competing restaurant after a frustrating visit. While speed and convenience remain important, many guests continue to value friendly, accessible customer service alongside digital technology.

McDonald’s Continues Investing in Digital Innovation

McDonald’s has made digital ordering a central part of its long-term growth strategy. Mobile apps, loyalty programs, kiosks, delivery partnerships, and AI-assisted technology are expected to remain major priorities as customer preferences evolve. The company says offering multiple ordering options allows guests to choose whichever method works best for them.

Technology Works Best When Customer Service Remains Available

McDonald’s digital transformation has made ordering faster and more convenient for many customers, but it has also sparked concerns about reduced access to in-person assistance. Surveys suggest that while self-service kiosks are widely used, many guests still expect knowledgeable employees to be available when technology fails or questions arise. As automation continues to expand across the restaurant industry, balancing innovation with reliable customer service may prove essential to maintaining customer satisfaction and loyalty.
