Even though the royal family is known for certain etiquette, they’ve also been known to break the rules on occasion. Yes, there are certain foods the Queen would prefer the family not to eat — like garlic and shellfish. Reason being, garlic isn’t too kind to your breath, and shellfish might cause gastrointestinal issues if consumed outside of the home. While both foods are probably fine, it’s best to keep up appearances. So, uh — where does pizza fall on the list?
Not too long ago, Kate Middleton outed the fact that Prince William liked to enjoy a slice or four while watching television on the couch. When they were opening the Oasis recreation center, Prince William joked to the British military personnel that would be using the facilities to “keep the pizza off the sofas.” Without missing a beat, Middleton admitted that her husband was “a nightmare with that,” meaning it’s been something they’ve probably talked about while at home. But this time, it’s the Queen who’s in the hot seat regarding everyone’s favorite dinner.
This week, Middleton visited the King Henry’s Walk Garden in the London borough of Islington to help cook pizzas outdoors with some of the kids. She was also open for questions, which must have been an incredible experience for the community.
According to People, 8-year-old Nadirah had a question about the Queen. And that question was, “Has the Queen ever had pizza?”
It’s a valid question. But since Middleton didn’t seem to recall the Queen ever enjoying a slice before, she had to tell Nadirah that she wasn’t too sure.
Her official response was, “You know, that’s such a good question. I don’t know. I don’t know. Maybe next time I see her, shall I ask?” And yes, we hope she does.
But first, let’s do a little math here. Middleton and Prince William were married back in April of 2011. This year, they’ll be celebrating eight years together. And that’s not even counting the time they were romantically linked prior to the big day.
That means that Middleton has spent enough time with the Queen to know her pretty well. And since pizza seems to be a decent part of her own life, especially while raising three kids, you’d assume she’d know by now if the Queen actually liked pizza.
The best person to ask, outside of Middleton and the Queen herself? Probably the Queen’s past personal chef, Darren McGrady. It’s a hard job to serve royalty, but McGrady learned everything about the Queen’s likes and dislikes. According to him, she’s not really adventurous when it comes to meal planning.
“Sadly, the Queen is not a foodie,” he said, according to People. “She eats to live, unlike Prince Philip, who loves to eat and would stand and talk food all day.”
McGrady also mentioned that the Queen has never been fond of adding starch to her diet. Unfortunately, pizza is a pretty starchy food choice. “No starch is the rule. No potatoes, rice, or pasta for dinner,” he said. “Just usually something like grilled sole with vegetables and salad.”
So, at least you know what to eat if you want to eat like the Queen. At the age of 92, she’s definitely doing something right.
Still, it’s a big shame that she’s missing out on all of this.
Seriously — there’s a big chance that the Queen doesn’t even know what Pizza Hut or Domino’s tastes like. She may never have enjoyed a DiGiorno.
And I bet money she’s never given Totino’s pizza rolls a shot. Not even once.
No matter what, you have to really admire how well the Queen seems to stick to schedule and routine, which is important with every healthy diet. When it comes to food and dieting, it’s often hard to stick to your goals. But it doesn’t seem like food is a big issue for the Queen to navigate — she has her favorites, and she stays as nutritionally balanced as possible.
