The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a voluntary recall of a Friendly’s ice cream product due to a packaging error.

A batch of Cookies & Cream ice cream was mistakenly placed in Vanilla Bean cartons, leading to undeclared soy and wheat allergens on the label. While no illnesses have been reported, the mislabeling could pose serious health risks for individuals with allergies.

The recalled product is packaged in 48 fl. oz. Friendly’s Vanilla Bean ice cream cartons with a Friendly’s Cookies & Cream lid. Affected cartons display a best-by date of 11/26/25. The mispackaging makes it easy for consumers to mistake the product for plain Vanilla Bean, which does not contain soy or wheat (NBC Philadelphia).

Why the Recall Was Issued

The voluntary recall was initiated after it was discovered that a limited quantity of Cookies & Cream ice cream was mistakenly packaged in Vanilla Bean containers. Since Vanilla Bean packaging does not list soy or wheat allergens, the mislabeled cartons could trigger severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. The recall was made with the knowledge of the FDA.

The Health Risks of Undeclared Allergens

For people with food allergies, undeclared ingredients can be life-threatening. Soy and wheat are both recognized as major allergens that may cause symptoms ranging from hives to anaphylaxis. Even small amounts can pose a risk, which is why labeling accuracy is so critical. Regulators emphasize that food mislabeling, even when accidental, demands swift corrective action.

Scope of the Distribution

The recalled ice cream was distributed to retailers in several Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Because Friendly’s is a widely recognized brand, the mislabeled products may have reached freezers across a broad consumer base. Shoppers in these regions are strongly advised to check their purchases carefully.

Check Your Package

Here’s how to identify the recalled ice cream: Brand: Friendly’s, Flavor Labeled on Lid: Cookies & Cream, Carton Body: Vanilla Bean, 48 fl. oz., Best By Date: 11/26/25. If your package matches these identifiers, do not consume it. Instead, discard it or return it to the store for a refund.

What Consumers Should Do Next

Friendly’s has urged customers to stop eating the recalled ice cream immediately. Products can be returned to the point of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions can also contact the company’s customer service line at 800-587-2259. Acting quickly helps prevent potential health risks for families and households.

No Illnesses Reported

So far, no adverse reactions have been reported in connection with the recalled product. Still, allergen-related recalls are treated seriously because reactions can occur suddenly. Even trace exposure to soy or wheat can cause dangerous outcomes in those with allergies.

Allergen mislabeling is one of the most common causes of food recalls in the U.S. This case illustrates how even a packaging mix-up can create significant health risks. It underscores the need for strict quality control in food manufacturing and serves as a reminder for consumers to remain vigilant about recall alerts and product packaging details.

Building Consumer Trust Through Transparency

Recalls, while unsettling, also demonstrate a company’s commitment to transparency and consumer safety. By issuing the voluntary recall in coordination with the FDA, Friendly’s shows accountability and willingness to act quickly. Food safety experts emphasize that transparent communication during recalls helps build long-term trust between brands and their customers, even when mistakes occur.
